They’re calling it—the consciousness shift that began online and shifted the Overton Window of political discourse dramatically—the Awakening. It is admittedly a bit of a melodramatic term, but it is so used as it describes the feeling of being jolted awake after a long slumber, comparable to the feeling of realization that one has been unknowingly propagandized by a state and press that was not quite as free as we’d thought.
After George Bush’s administration left office, it was as if much of the Western populace was put under a spell. We were persuaded to believe that benevolent people were now in power, and so we became more ignorant to the cruelty of people we assumed to be benevolent. We glorified Obama despite his role also murdering tons of innocents. We accepted the Biden Administration’s narrative that Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was entirely unprovoked. We believed that Hillary Clinton was a boss babe feminist, and not just as much of a corrupt warmongerer as her Bush/Cheney friends.
While we were sleeping, we didn’t realize how complex and alarming our propaganda system really was. If you’re new to it, here are some articles to get you started. May you follow the breadcrumbs where they lead.
The unravelling of the Awakening has led us to this really interesting yet extremely stressful splitting point when it comes to the media divide. The issues with the media is only going to become more and more apparent. Trump’s inauguration has already automatically come with a jarring shift in narrative, and the defunding of USAID—which will indeed create chaos globally and will indeed hurt people doing actual humanitarian work—also means the defunding of suspicious foreign projects including propaganda programs. Consider this report for example, which investigates how much of the Ukrainian “independent press” actually depends on Western money. Many of these major changes mean that amidst all the chaos, messaging in our media will also become drastically different. It will become impossible not to notice.
These kind of shifts in the media however will mean people will need to have conversations about some really difficult topics. It will become more and more obvious to people that reality is being forced to fit into ill-fitting lenses, and that sources we once trusted to guide us are now preventing us from understanding what is actually happening in the world.
The process, in reckoning with the fact that we were misled by manipulative narratives, will in itself be painful. Here are some clashes of warring ideas and contradictions in our media that people are going to be forced to rexamine:
Never Forget the Holocaust (But it’s Bullying to Criticize the Current Holocaust)
This is the most obvious one, and many of you will have already begun these conversations. We are all going to have to reexamine why Western schooling was so obsessed with teaching us about the Holocaust, and yet does not want us to apply any of that education to what is actually going on in our present lives. We’re all supposed to participate in annual rituals where we wear poppies to commemorate the deaths that occurred during WWII, yet now that there’s another Holocaust unfolding before us, funded by our very own empire, we’re not supposed to have an opinion about it. We’re all supposed to just go to work and pay our taxes and not talk about it, rendering any anti-war education absolutely performative and meaningless.
It’s even now considered bullying to criticize countries for committing genocide. You can get arrested for it. We are meant to keep our criticisms to regimes that existed nearly a hundred years ago. But criticizing current power structures is not permitted.
Never Forget WWII (by Supporting the West to Start WIII)
On the subject of anti-war sentiment, while America normalizes relations with Russia and severs relationships with its traditional allies, UK PM Keir Starmer has stated his intention to possibly deploy British troops in Ukraine. Starmer’s claim for why is that the war in Ukraine is existential for Europe. But if he does so, then England and Russia will be officially at war, and it will indisputably be the beginning of WWIII.
Ukraine has already lost one third of its population, and kids as young as eighteen are being sacrificed at the behest of stronger powers. The majority of Ukrainians themselves now just want the war to be over. But given Starmer’s statement, it appears that the EU may still try to maintain the narrative that the West’s intentions in Ukraine were entirely benevolent.
The problem is that many of us have now become aware this is basically bullshit. Western populaces were highly manipulated to provide consent regarding the Russo-Ukrainian war. When the war began, we did not all know this, but it has been well-documented for decades that America and the West were well aware that they needed to be very careful about any expansion of NATO into Ukraine, as this would be Putin’s red line for invasion. But they provoked Putin anyway, and then depicted the invasion in the media as entirely out of the blue. The West thus sacrificed Russian and Ukrainian lives just to try and dominate their longtime Cold War enemy in a proxy war. And they lied to us in our media so that we would accept Putin as the villain.
Given the recent change in America and the Ukraine’s relationship however, the initial narratives surrounding this war is likely to disintegrate in the coming months.
Canadian Patriotism is Now Mandated (Please Forget Everything the Government Has Done for the Past Decade)
There’s currently a “patriotism” psyop going on in Canadian media right now because of Trump’s tariffs and annexation threats. We are all expected to suddenly be talking about how great Canada is because of America’s random aggression towards us.
The problem is that, especially for young people or those struggling financially right now, it’s kind of an insulting and bizarre time for the government and media to demand patriotism from their people. Things are currently a mess over here. Canada is struggling pretty bad even without the tariffs, and our Finance Minister and Prime Minister literally just resigned in disgrace a month ago following a year where our Liberal government supported Israel in sketchy ways while they were massacring a bunch of children.
I’ve already written in length about Canada’s moral failures including the prioritization of death over life in more ways than one. We have supported Britain and America through many immoral wars, and our government does not get to escape this moral judgment. It’s jarring as hell that I’m now supposed to wave my flag enthusiastically just because America’s Dr. Frankenstein has turned on Canada’s Igor.
Canadian people do not deserve to be punished by Trump’s tariffs, and I also don’t want to be annexed. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to be acting patriotic while my disappointment with Canada is at an all time low, and this difference in opinion amongst Canadians will likely result in some tension.
One Should Feel Guilty for Calling Biden & Harris Evil Because Trump’s Also Evil
Yes, Trump is despicable. Like Biden, he also just approved a $1 billion arms sale to Israel. He has advocated for ethnically cleansing Gaza, and chose war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu as the first leader to visit America after his inauguration, despite Bibi’s ICC arrest warrant. Trump is also pushing the ridiculous narrative that Hamas is “refusing to return hostages” while omitting the fact that Hamas is under no obligation to return hostages if Israel can’t stop murdering people and is still not allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza. Make no mistake, Donald Trump does not care about preserving human life.
But people that are claiming that this means that American voters should have voted for Harris instead (who is also a warmonger, who consistently defended and supported Israel’s genocide) are missing the core problem here.
Imagine this scenario: you are invited to two palaces. At each palace, you stand before a king that demands your allegiance. One dressed in blue. He is polished, calm, and refined. The other is dressed in red. He is ugly, his clothing rotted and stained. Each king murders a cat in front of you. After the blue king’s murder, he orders his servants to clean up the blood. But following the red king’s murder, he burns the entire palace to the ground.
“Do you see all this destruction?” the blue king asks you. “If you choose the king in red, the palace will be destroyed. Choose me, and the palace will stand. No ugliness has to be witnessed. We will bury the bones within the palace’s walls.”
The fundamental problem here is that American voters cannot select a scenario in which the cat does not die. Though the media insists that the left and right must always be at war, American voters should not be arguing which each other about which cruel king would be worse. They must instead ask what can be done now that they know they were never given an option to vote for a leader that would have spared the cat’s life.
The country committing false flags and genocide is the one making the Middle East “safe”
New Secretary of State Marco Rubio is filling Anthony Blinken’s bloody shoes perfectly. And by “perfectly” I mean he’s being gross and evil as fuck which just highlights my point above, where red and blue Secretaries of State warmonger equally.
Listen for example to this disgusting gaslighting where Rubio claims that if more countries in the Middle East were like Israel, the region would be a “safer” place. This complete and utter bullshit narrative is so insane that I literally cannot believe they are still attempting it.
Thousands of people across the world have witnessed the atrocities committed by Israel against innocent people in Gaza. We know about the detention camps. We know about the beheaded babies, and actually saw evidence of it in Palestine, unlike the lies of October 7, where literally no evidence of beheaded babies ever emerged. We watched the IDF target, torture, and kill journalists, aid workers, and doctors. We know about the Hannibal Directive, which Yoav Gallant admitted to himself. We know Israel constantly violates ceasefires, manipulates narratives about the hostages, hurts innocent people in Lebanon and Syria. We know that the majority of Israeli Jews support Trump’s stated intention to ethnically cleanse Gaza.
While the media and Trump administration will continue to spin bullshit narratives, Israel is the current greatest threat on the planet to world peace. We have to contend with this by acknowledging the following:
Israel and America are the only ones not required to adhere to international law
Despite the ICC’s issuing of arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant for committing war crimes and human rights violations, countries that purport to care about international order have already defied them, to the detriment of everyone in the world who wants to live in peace. America, France, Poland, and Italy have already refused to hold Israel accountable, allowing Netanyahu to continue to do whatever the fuck he wants.
The consequences of this are extremely dangerous. But what could be even more dangerous is if the media continues to downplay Israel’s psychotic behaviour forever, and members of the populace continue to be unaware of it forever. It does not seem like Western media is ever going to throw in the towel about their insistence to always frame Israel as a victim, even when it becomes more and more obvious that false flags are Mossad’s modus operandi.
So is there really incentive anymore for Israel to play by the rules of the world regarding literally anything anymore? They can murder children without impunity because of the evils of capitalism. And Israel—despite the fact that they try to play coy about it—is the most dangerous country in the world that is also in possession of nuclear weapons. As they lose public favour and behave more and more like absolute psychopaths, how much farther will they be willing to go to maintain their position in the world?
If your government, propaganda system, and education system fooled you about any of the above, please give yourself grace as you learn about it. You were up against power structures that are more evil and powerful than we’d understood. But people will have to “awaken” quickly to realize the dangers unfolding in the world.
If we as a global population allow Israel to get away with this without any punishment or accountability for their crimes, then there is no reason why any innocent civilian in the world should ever feel safe again. If there will be no justice or protection for Palestine, then there is no reason to believe any civilian population is safe. If international law only applies to everyone but America and Israel, then this means that international order is already dead.
There is hope, however. In a war of narratives, anyone can counter lies. So if we see false narratives, we can correct them. If they spread lies, we can spread what’s true.

Mainstream media narrative is indeed changing. New York Times admits Ukraine is a proxy war March 29, 2025: https://substack.com/inbox/post/160219459. For the record, I wrote about the proxy war on August 10th, 2024: https://eleanormowens.substack.com/p/the-hero-narrative-poisoned-the-west
It's hard to believe that people actually fell for these narratives, and continue to. It's so important to be discerning about where we get our news.
