I am honestly disgusted as a Canadian! I’m ashamed of everything our government has done in support of a genocide. Our healthcare is failing our education system is failing our infrastructure is failing. There is no difference from conservative or liberal they are all the same. The propaganda Canadians are exposed to everyday is disgusting. Canada is not so great!
We had an amazing system for creating affordable housing. Started around 40 years ago. The co-op system ran by CMHC. It paid for itself. I lived in a co-op for 25 years. Our governments refuse to totally reinstate it. Thanks for your insights. I too live in Vancouver. Chinatown, the DTES, the Belly of the Beast and I live with the consequences of poor policy daily.
I think western leaders' support of Israel while supporting the genocide in Gaza has permanently alienated those who may have seen the west, including Canada and the USA, as having any kind of moral authority.
Thank you for that bitter testimony about the reality of ordinary Canadians. this disillusioned and not very optimistic look reflects a sentiment that is probably widely shared, within Western societies in general, whether it is the USA, Great Britain, or Europe.
these societal crises arise in the global context of the deep slump that the planet is going through, with its procession of famines, wars, and the decline of moral values as well as the threats of major conflicts weighing on the world.
However, it is encouraging to see that conscious and responsible citizens are questioning and revolting against the established order, and are expressing their will for change, redefining priorities and reshaping international relations and institutions based on cooperation, mutual aid, respect for otherness, sovereignty and dignity of peoples…
If I changed the name of the country every word of your article could be a description of the state of affairs in the UK. Everything from the over subscribed struggling free healthcare to the housing crisis. Did your government also decrease the building of social housing? Relying on private landlords to fill the gap. I can see the situation getting worse as the continued support for Israel is causing divisions among the population. The ones that care are taking to the streets which is causing the other half to think the government has lost control snd they are now taking to the streets to protest about the pro Palestine supporters. There was a huge right wing March in London on Saturday. People are struggling and want to blame someone. Meanwhile kids are still being slaughtered every day in Gaza and Rafah with the help of western money.
